The makeup of the next Congress has been decided with Senator Warnock's victory in Georgia last night. Looking at a 51-seat Democratic majority in the Senate and a very narrow Republican majority in the House, we are heading into a complicated political situation for the next two years.
That's why it's crucial that we have progressive voices like Jamaal pushing for our priorities in Congress. If you support Jamaal's work, chip in to our campaign today.
Last week, Jamaal fought to get a vote to add sick leave for railway workers to contract legislation with railway companies. It was only because of progressive action that the vote even happened. Though we were defeated by conservative Democrats and Republicans in the Senate, we cannot let up the pressure for change.
As Jamaal said, "If the Democratic party fails to stand up for workers and in turn tolerate corporate greed, we will not be able to stop fascists in the Republican party from destroying our country and our planet. As elected officials, as unions, as grassroots organizers, we must be ready to fight for our values at any moment."
We need a strong progressive wing in Congress pushing the Democrats and President Biden to live up to our values. Votes like this one will keep coming up. The power of conservatives, of greedy corporations, and of the entrenched status quo might seem insurmountable — until it isn't.
Jamaal will always stand up and speak out against the injustices faced by working people across this country. In this next Congress, we'll need progressive leaders like Jamaal to fight against both business-as-usual politics and extremist Republican shenanigans.
