Dear John,

Enough is enough, the Prime Minister needs to sack Nanaia Mahuta.

Not only has Ms Mahuta overseen the ongoing debacle that is Three Waters, but new information shows she also openly defied Cabinet in her push to entrench the Three Waters legislation – essentially using a power reserved for constitutional matters to make it harder for National to repeal.

Earlier this year Cabinet ruled out entrenchment – but when the issue came up in Parliament Ms Mahuta led the charge in supporting the Greens’ proposal, claiming a ‘moral obligation’ to support entrenchment of the provision. Labour then unanimously voted for it.

Cabinet rules are clear. They say, “once Cabinet makes a decision, Ministers must support it, regardless of their personal views”. Yet despite breaching the Cabinet rules and openly defying her colleagues and the Prime Minister, Ms Mahuta remains a Minister.

For a Minister to openly defy a Cabinet decision - shows that the Prime Minister has lost control of her Cabinet.

It’s time for Jacinda Ardern to show some leadership, hold Ms Mahuta accountable, and sack her.

Labour is trying to use the notion of privatisation to distract from the absolute shocker that is Three Waters. So let me be clear – National has repeatedly ruled out privatisation. If elected, National will repeal and replace Three Waters, and water assets will be returned to community control.

Regards,

Christopher Luxon
