YOUR GIFT WILL BE DOUBLED! CLICK HERE TO DONATE! Dear Friend, I was honored to be invited to do a TED Talk which I want to share it with you, our trusted friends and partners. Without you, we could not do the work we do to further our goal of preventing the online exploitation of children. During the talk, I challenged the audience to "imagine what a safer internet would look like if we all did our part." For three decades, Enough Is Enough (EIE) has been calling on parents, the media, corporate America and government leaders to share the responsibility to protect children online. In my talk, as outlined in EIE's Children's Internet Safety Pledges, I called on the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to do its part by enforcing ALL the laws designed to protect children online, including obscenity, child pornography, sexual predation and sex trafficking laws. Please listen here as I described why this is so critical: For decades, the multi-billion pornography industry has been given a free pass to provide obscene content even though obscenity (hardcore pornography) is illegal under U.S. Federal law. 18 U.S.C. Chapter 71 § 1460-1470 prohibits distribution of obscenity on the internet and elsewhere, yet the laws have not been enforced in decades. Obscene content--which is mainstream on today's largest pornography websites--is graphic, explicit, and deviant. This content is NOT protected speech. It's far from "harmless." Children are increasingly becoming consumers. In fact, children under the age of 10 now account for 22% of online porn consumption among those under the age of 18, while 10- to 14 year-olds make up 36% of minor consumers (Bitdefender, 2016). It's powerfully additive, can physically change the brain, and can lead to the normalization of the content viewed as well as increased violence toward women. Tragically, pornography executives and platforms profit immensely from content depicting child sexual abuse, sex trafficking, revenge pornography and racist and misogynist themes. The GOOD NEWS is that we can clean up this mess. Enough Is Enough is calling on federal and state prosecutors to aggressively enforce all existing laws designed to prevent the sexual exploitation of children, including the obscenity law. If you haven't already, please sign EIE's Petition to the U.S. DOJ calling on them to hold pornography executives criminally liable for breaking U.S. criminal laws!
