Dear John,

We are elated to report on major news from our nation’s capital.

Last night, the U.S. Senate passed the Big Cat Public Safety Act — one of the Center for a Humane Economy’s top priorities in the Congress — in a unanimous vote.

Coming four months after two-thirds of U.S. House members backed the same bill, the Senate’s work completes Congress’s work on it. It now goes to President Biden for his signature.

Early in the new year, the nation will forbid several forms of exploitation of captive big cats.

No more trade in tigers, lions, and other big cats for the pet industry.

No more commercial cub petting operations, where the Joe Exotics of the world breed these animals for profit, sell tickets to handle the animals, and then discard them at a few months of age, putting the animals in danger.

This forthcoming national law came about after tireless and tactical work by our team at the Center for a Humane Economy and our sister organization, Animal Wellness Action.

You would think a bill to keep tigers and lions out of backyards and basements would be a breeze. But it wasn’t. It was a fight every step of the way, with exotic animal operators and other opponents of progress for animals battling us at every turn.

In the end, common sense and compassion won the day.

The big cats of our planet have been at a harmful crossroads. They are in peril in the wild. And in the United States, thousands have been held as captives, locked in basements, or kept in cages or on chains in backyards. After the novelty wears off, or after the roadside zoos are done exploiting them, the cats are discarded.

Now the situation in the United States changes. It will soon be a crime to trade in the animals for use as pets. And a crime to breed big cats for commercial cub petting.

This is just one of our priorities when it comes to national legislation to help animals. We are ever so close to passing the FDA Modernization Act 2.0 to eliminate an animal-testing mandate that runs through millions of animals a year. And we are close to passing a ban on the sale of shark fins in the United States.

There are other bills we are fighting to get over the finish line in the next three weeks.

I hope you’ll celebrate this win. And I hope you’ll consider donating to our work so we can do more of this. We have the best legislative team in the animal welfare movement. This outcome is just the latest indicator. [[link removed]]
