Jack,
Today, the Supreme Court hears Moore v Harper, that will potentially put democracy and voting rights for millions at risk.
Overturning voting rights will disproportionately affect our Black and Brown communities. If SCOTUS decides to side with Tim Moore and the GOP, it will be a giant step back from the equality and equity we seek to create every day.
Moore v. Harper explores the Independent Legislature Theory. If SCOTUS decides to uphold this theory, it will deem state courts and constitutions powerless and will allow state legislators in the General Assembly to regulate our federal elections. Moore v Harper also gives state legislators the power to gerrymander and continue suppressing the vote without legal challenges in court. With a conservative majority in both chambers as well as our state courts, we know that the future of democracy in NC is in grave danger.
But we cannot stop fighting for democracy, regardless of the decision that the Supreme Court makes next year. Every American and every North Carolinian deserves to have their voice heard.
The New North Carolina Project proudly stands for North Carolinian's voice and choice to vote, free of voter suppression and intimidation. The work we do every day, engaging and mobilizing NC’s communities of color, is key to electing strong leaders who will heed our needs, protect democracy and promote racial equity. Jack, can we count on you to chip in $5 right now to uplift the voices of NC’s communities of color and protect reproductive rights?
