Tell the FDA: Get Dangerous Chemicals Like Red No. 3 Out of Our Food!

Dear friend,

Food additives like the popular dye Red No. 3, found in numerous candies, snack cakes and baked goods, are linked to serious health issues, including cancer and neurological problems. But they are still commonly found in our food, because the FDA has failed to act.

It’s the FDA’s responsibility to keep our food safe and healthy, but they have woefully failed in their duty. Nearly 99 percent of food chemicals introduced since 2000 were approved by the food and chemical industry, NOT the FDA. It’s outrageous!

EWG has officially petitioned the FDA to get Red No. 3 out of our food – and now the agency is asking the public to weigh in. This is our chance to urge the agency to take our health seriously and get Red No. 3 out of our food for good, but we only have a limited time to make our voices heard.

Just take a look at this short list of some of the worst chemicals EWG’s research has found in our food to date:

* Red No. 3, a food dye added to many candies, baked goods and snack cakes in the U.S. This dye has been linked to cancer, behavioral difficulties in children, and neurological problems. Although the FDA banned many uses of Red No. 3 in 1990, they failed to ban the use of the additive in food.
* Titanium dioxide, a DNA-damaging additive found in more than 3,000 packaged foods. The EU deemed this chemical “no longer safe for human consumption,” but the FDA hasn’t reviewed it in more than 50 years.
* Potassium bromate, a carcinogenic chemical used in bread, banned in Europe and found in more than 130 packaged foods.
