John,
In the past few weeks, we have witnessed the power of the railroad industry competing against the interests of working Americans. I want to make it abundantly clear that I stand with railroad workers as they demand the basic right to paid sick leave — a right every worker deserves.
Railroad workers provide an essential service that benefits every single one of us – and yet, our proposal to guarantee even a week of paid sick leave to railroad workers failed in the Senate. Senators themselves enjoy unlimited paid sick leave — the hypocrisy is astounding.
In the House, it was progressives who used our collective power to negotiate a proposal that would address railroad unions’ core demands. Our bloc is powerful, and we'll only continue to grow when more progressives than ever are seated in Congress next year.
I will do everything in my power to ensure American workers’ demands are heard and their needs met. It is time for us to stand up to industry and put people over profits.
Our progressive bloc is fighting for Medicare for All, but it’s just as important that our people can actually access the quality healthcare we all deserve — including through paid sick leave.
Our country is one of the only wealthy nations in the world that doesn’t guarantee sick leave — we’re going to change that. I promise to keep fighting for paid sick leave for railroad workers, and for all.
In solidarity,
Pramila
