Build a Relationship with your CA State Legislators
Go to Holidays Events or Meet with Them Directly

California's State Assembly Members and Senators were sworn into office yesterday, Monday December 5th, and new bills can be introduced between now and February 17, 2023. A Voice for Choice Advocacy has not heard of any "Bad Bills" that are being proposed, so we are hopeful the amount of Reactive Activism (fighting bad bills) will be minimal in 2023.

Similar to past years, A Voice for Choice Advocacy spends December and January meeting with legislators and their staffers on Proactive Legislation (getting new bills introduced) that falls within our mission. An example, in 2020, Assembly Cristina Garcia introduced a bill to label the ingredients of feminine hygiene products on our behalf. This bill was signed by the Governor and will go into effect this January. A Voice for Choice Advocacy has a number of bills, relating to various medical freedom and health rights issues, that we are "shopping" this year with the hopes of getting at least one authored. Legislators are more likely to author bills on topics which they are personally invested in, which are important to their constituents and/or which are proposed by organizations that donate a significant amount to their election campaigns. So in part our efforts are to match bills with legislators who would be interested in authoring them. Our meetings thus far have been very productive, and we have recieved positive feedback on many of our proposed bills.

While legislators are in Sacramento this week for a special session of the legislature, called by Governor Newsom to address the high price of gas in California, they will be returning to their district offices next week for local holiday events. As important as AVFCA's work is in Sacramento, it is imperative that legislators know their constituents are holding them accountable. In order to do this they need to know who you are. Therefore AVFCA encourages you to sign up for your CA Assembly Member and State Senator's newsletters and find out when their district events are so you can meet your representatives and their staff in-person in a fun, low-key environment. Be sure to keep it positive and share your personal stories and what has impacted you over the past few years and what your hopes are for California.

Take Action TODAY : Build a relationship with your CA State Senator and Assembly Member starting NOW. Your voice as a constituent is critical for them to hear, and will help A Voice for Choice Advocacy's efforts in the Capitol. We can't fight this fight without YOU! Take the first step right now - don't wait for tomorrow...It won't take more than 3 minutes:

Enter your address into this website and identify your Assembly Member and Senator (FindYourRep.Legislature.CA.Gov)

Click on the resulting links for your Assembly Member and Senator website and do the following three things:

Sign up for their newsletter/district updates

Check for upcoming events (town halls, holiday events, etc) and find at least one to attend before the end of the year.  If they do not have any or do not have any that will allow you to easily interact with them, call and ask for an appointment with them, to share some of your thoughts regarding issues in their district (do not mention vaccines).

Find a non-vaccine mandate topic of interest to them by identifying their passions (look at previous legislation or what topics show up in their website feed) so when you meet them you can build a relationship on a neutral topic first.
