Minimizing Future Flood Damage
Webinar at7:30 pm CT, Wed,Dec 7, 2022
Many natural systems reduce flood damag e by soaking up water if they are not sealed off with concrete. This webinar will feature St. Louis University Biology Professor Jason Knouft explaining how urban streams and rivers can thrive with the diverse ecosystems which are critical for water absorption. It will also include comments by others on flood threats to low income renters, solidarity support for victims and reducing storm-water problems via rain barrels, rain gardens, detention ponds, bioswales, greenways and rainscaping as well as the need to reduce impervious surfaces and expand gray infrastructure (storm-water drainage pipes, storm water vaults, and pumps). Audience participation is welcome.
Jason Knouft, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Saint Louis University. He is a Large River Ecologist at the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center in East Alton, Illinois.
