John,
Donald Trump may be banned from Facebook, but his lies are not.
According to an internal Facebook memo, fact-checkers have been directed by the company to stop fact-checking Trump now that he’s running for president again.[1] This means that Trump’s lies―whether spread by himself or others―will go unchecked. And, next month, Facebook will reconsider Trump’s ban―two years after he incited a deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol to stop the certification of the presidential election.[2]
Similarly, Twitter CEO Elon Musk has reinstated Trump’s Twitter account and fired their content moderation chief, making Twitter the Wild West for hate speech and lies, including Trump’s Big Lie.[3]
Just this past weekend, on his own social media platform, Trump continued to spread the Big Lie, suggesting that we shred the U.S. Constitution and install him as president:
Election lies undermine our democracy and are responsible for the January 6th attack on our Capitol. Sign now to demand social media platforms combat election disinformation, hate speech, harassment, and other harmful content.
We cannot allow social media platforms to become overrun with hate speech and lies. It is their obligation to moderate their content and combat election disinformation and other harmful content.
Thank you for taking action today to protect the future of our democracy and our society.
