Friend,
Whether it’s the Atlanta district of John Lewis, the Baltimore district of Elijah Cummings – or Detroit, Minneapolis, the Bronx, or Boston – the president flings insults at the American people to try to shame the public servants they have elected to represent them. It is also obvious that there is a unique contempt he holds for his black and brown critics.
Since launching my campaign for the United States Senate in Georgia, I’ve called for the House to begin impeachment proceedings against the president. We cannot allow fear to cause us to shrink from our constitutional duty.
I wrote about fear and leadership in the Democratic Party in a post you can read here.
While the unacceptable, unabating racism that spews from the president’s mouth and Twitter account must be rejected outright, Democrats must focus on our advocacy for a progressive agenda that delivers for the people.
I won my first election for mayor of Columbus, Georgia, in the Tea Party wave of 2010, and I did it by being fearless about my beliefs. That’s the playbook Lucy McBath used to win a Republican +8 district in Georgia last year, and how “The Squad” – Congresswomen Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib – commands our attention to the issues they highlight every day.
Leadership with moral clarity is what we have to be fighting for.
There’s good policy, and then there’s what the people running are going to do to rally people around it. For far too long, fear has caused Democrats to cede territory to Republicans – whether it’s talking about healthcare, gun violence, or a host of other issues.
But I’m not scared. Read my post about fear and leadership, and how we’re running in Georgia to write a new playbook for 2020.
