Dear John,

Well, it’s been quite a year for the early childhood field. As we slowly emerge from the height of the pandemic, we are inspired by the dedication and passion each of you bring to our collective work to realize the potential of early learning. Over the past 12 months, you have called for higher wages, better work environments, anti-racist practices, inclusive approaches for every child and so much more.

Below we’ve highlighted a few ways you have inspired us and our partners to do better and support professionals across the country.

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy holiday season and a healthy new year!

Please note that in alignment with our core values of Appreciation and Respect, Start Early staff will be off for the holidays between December 19, 2022 and January 2, 2023. We are grateful for your patience during this time.

Best,

Start Early Professional Development Team

Integrating Anti-Bias Lens into Staff Training
Equitable, High-Quality Professional Development
[link removed]
Seeding Equitable Educator Development , a new report by Trust for Learning, highlights how Start Early is integrating anti-bias, anti-racist content into The Essential Practices of Educare, a series of training modules designed to build early childhood professionals’ capacity to deliver high-quality instruction.

Racial equity leaders from a range of disciplines lent their expertise to proposed revisions to the Essential Practices of Educare. Start Early implemented many of the recommendations to strengthen the content, spanning the following areas:
- Ensuring the use of asset-based instead of deficit-based language
- Honoring and incorporating participants’ identities in training
- Cultivating psychological safety in training spaces
- Making & repairing DEIB mistakes during trainingNext, we will incorporate improvements into The Essential Practices of Educare Train-the-Trainer program, which is intended to equip Essential Practices of Educare trainers with skills and mindsets necessary to create anti-bias and anti-racist professional development experiences.

Case Study: Statewide Training Builds a Common Framework for Quality
How Trainers in Mississippi Created a Shared Understanding of “High Quality” Across SystemsIn order to create a common framework for quality across their fragmented state systems, four trainers in Mississippi embarked on a journey that began with participation in The Essential Practices of Educare’s Train-the-Trainer program. The training gave them the foundation to launch a unique, statewide professional learning model that engaged educators from different program types to improve their day-to-day practice supporting children and families. The training team started by focusing on improving family engagement practices. But that was only the first step...
