John,
We're headed to the U.S. Supreme Court TOMORROW – where we need to stop an anti-democracy power grab few Americans are aware of.
You see, while the nation is focused on the Georgia runoffs, some rogue politicians from North Carolina are trying to completely demolish the system of checks and balances our democracy depends on.
It’s called the Independent State Legislature Theory… but I call it the Lawless Lawmaker Theory.
Here’s why: if they get their way, these extremist politicians will seize nearly unchecked power over our federal elections: so they can manipulate the results however they want.
Now, Common Cause and our co-defendants are headed to the Supreme Court – and need your help to make sure they REJECT this bizarre and dangerous idea.
So, what does this mean for everyday Americans? If we lose this case, it could mean an end to early voting and vote-by-mail in states where anti-democracy extremists hold power. It’d be a green light for a lot more deliberately rigged voting maps, with no checks or balances to keep them honest. And, it’d kick into overdrive the recent resurgence of Jim Crow voting laws.
I know this sounds like a lot – could it really be this bad? Unfortunately, it is. Our democracy is built on the foundation of checks and balances – a vital safeguard against those seeking to rig our government against us.
So if our opponents successfully convince the court to declare open season on our voting rights, the results will be catastrophic. That’s why I’m coming to you right now, John.
As I write you, our lawyers are preparing their arguments for our Supreme Court hearing tomorrow. But it’s going to take more than strong legal arguments to win this case.
We’re rising to meet that challenge. We have a major public mobilization underway – building off our Election Protection work from this year’s midterms – to ensure people know exactly how much is at stake.
But I’m not going to lie to you, John, our team is stretched really thin right now.
As you know, this marathon election isn’t over yet. The team at Common Cause is working around the clock to secure a free and fair election in Georgia today – after we put almost everything we had into the general election.
And at the same time, we’re preparing to head to the Supreme Court to fight this latest attack against our democracy.
We’re struggling to keep up, but we simply can’t afford not to.
We desperately need to ramp up our work to argue and WIN at the Supreme Court. But we can’t protect our democracy without you. Can you please rush a contribution of $3 or more to help power our work?
Let me be clear: With you by our side, I know we can win this fight. We just need your help to meet this moment.
In common cause,
Suzanne Almeida, Director of State Operations
and the team at Common Cause
