Virginia's legislative session started this week. And for the first time since I can remember, lawmakers are actually working to address gun violence.

As a Virginian, I know firsthand how local communities have been impacted by gun violence -- from Virginia Tech and on-air tragedies to the everyday consequences of living with the threat of firearms. Yet, when the governor called a special session last year to address this problem, no action was taken by the legislature -- a legislature elected under district maps declared unconstitutional because they were racially gerrymandered.

Thankfully, last November, Virginians voted under new, constitutional election maps -- and a new legislature was elected under those fair maps. Now, lawmakers are finally acting on the issues that voters care about most! Virginians, like me, are expecting our representatives to finally pass real reform that addresses the urgent threat of gun violence in the Commonwealth.

It's an exciting time for Virginia's democracy. This is what happens when the maps are fair -- the issues we care about gain traction and the progress we need becomes a reality.

The fight for fair maps will be won at the state level. So many of the fights on the issues we care about happen on the state level. It's why we started the All On The Line campaign and why we've structured our work around key target states where our grassroots movement can win this fight in 2021 and secure progress for the next decade. But we need your help.
