Hi John, It shouldn’t come as a surprise that an organization named the “Chamber of Commerce” isn’t focused on regular people like us. But the reality is worse. Chip in now >> The Chamber of Commerce should really be renamed the “Chamber of Big Business” because that’s all they care about. The national Chamber spends hundreds of millions of dollars each year lobbying Congress to make life easier for the largest companies in America and harder for everyone else. And here in Philly, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce has funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars to local politicians and spent even more hundreds of thousands lobbying those politicians after they’re elected. The Chamber’s hired guns are working every day to cut back on protections for workers, stop legislation that would make healthcare affordable for everyone, fight meaningful climate-change laws, and (of course) lower corporate tax rates. These aren’t the policies that American workers want; they aren’t even the policies that the millions of small businesses across the country want. But they are certainly what the Fortune 500 wants. Now the Philly Chamber is trying to take its political influence to the new levels. As candidates that back working people have continued winning seats across government, including City Council, the Philly Chamber has declared war on all progressive candidates. Corporate giants are scared of progress because meaningful change might require them to pay their fair share rather than outsized bonuses to CEOs. So, backed by big businesses like Comcast, PECO, and Wells Fargo, the Philly Chamber is already stepping up its political spending to keep progressives out of city office—and to stop them from making real changes to help our city. We have to fight back. We can’t be held hostage by mega-corporations that care more about profits than anything that matters to ordinary Americans.
