Celebrating Christmas with our loved ones is just what we need after a long and contentious election season. But we know that this is perhaps the most dangerous time of year for our shared values of faith, family, and freedom, thanks to Congress' lame-duck session.
Long before the elections, FRC began preparing for this moment when leftists in Congress would use the distraction of the holidays as people are preoccupied, to quietly push through legislation that undermines life, family, free speech, religious freedom, and more.
As predicted, Left-leaning politicians are indeed pulling out every trick and backroom deal to push their agenda--especially regarding marriage. FRC has been on the frontlines sounding the alarm on the so-called "Respect for Marriage Act" that will go much farther than simply legalizing same-sex marriage and repealing the bipartisan Defense of Marriage Act.
As FRC's Quena Gonzalez warned about the ramifications of the dangerous bill: "It would tacitly vilify millions of Americans who still believe in natural marriage by labeling that belief as 'sex discrimination'--tantamount to racism. And it would also threaten the tax-exempt status of faith-based nonprofits and subject business owners to even more costly litigation."
Despite the clear threat to the First Amendment freedoms of individual Americans, some squishy Republicans ignored those concerns and still chose to support the bill. The legislation passed the U.S. Senate last week and is expected to be voted on in the House of Representatives this week.
Make no mistake: the (Dis)Respect for Marriage Act makes people prime targets for government harassment, investigation, prosecution, even civil action.
But we know what is right. We know what is true.
Whether by the Court or by Congress, truth cannot be altered.
We need to have the courage to stand for it, remembering the words of the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6, 'and having done all...stand firm.' These words apply directly to me and you, John. FRC will continue to stand.
