Dear John,
Should we just ignore Ye (the rapper formerly known as Kanye West)?
Are we just adding oxygen to the voices of extremists like Ye, white supremacist Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes and others if we shine a spotlight on the danger when they spread antisemitic tropes and lies? ADL is speaking out as:
-

Extremists sit down for dinner with a former President;
- QAnon, the Proud Boys and others come back out from the shadows after Elon Musk loosens the rules on Twitter;

- Ye makes an appearance on Alex Jones’ conspiracy-spreading Infowars program to praise Hitler and the Nazis and to question the existence of the Holocaust. (For an explanation of Ye’s latest idiocy, please

Ringing the alarm bells when there is a fire is not a mistake. It is urgently needed action. We must not passively stand by while those who spread flames of hate gain footholds in the mainstream.
On Twitter, Ye’s antisemitic stereotypes and threats weren’t enough to get him suspended, despite the violations of the platform’s rules. It wasn’t until Ye tweeted out a swastika in a Star of David that Musk finally decided to suspend him from the platform. I guess we know where Musk’s line is now.
This isn’t just about Ye, though. In fact,

ADL just issued a report on how many extremist figures are taking advantage of the platform ever since Musk took over.
QAnon conspiracy theories, disinformation and events have returned to Twitter. Jason Kessler — an organizer of the deadly Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville — has used his newly verified status to advocate for Klansman David Duke to return as well. The Proud Boys have opened Twitter accounts for their chapters in New York, Connecticut and Maine. (The Proud Boys are also among the groups behind the recent surge in

anti-LGBTQ+ threats. )
We’ve also seen less action by Twitter to remove hateful tweets. ADL regularly reports antisemitic tweets to Twitter and keeps track of which post are removed. Since Musk’s takeover, Twitter has gone from taking action on 60 percent of the tweets ADL reported down to only 30 percent.
Twitter is not the only platform that is closing its eyes to hate. Amazon has declined to pull the deeply antisemitic and Holocaust-denying book and video

We are not alone in this fight. President Biden tweeted a sharp counterpoint to Ye and other extremists: “The Holocaust happened. Hitler was a demonic figure. And instead of giving it a platform, our political leaders should be calling out and rejecting antisemitism wherever it hides. Silence is complicity.”
And after former President Trump’s recent meal with Ye and Fuentes, a number of high-profile Republicans spoke out as well. Former VP Pence said: “Trump was wrong to give a white nationalist, an antisemite and Holocaust denier a seat at the table.”
Both Biden and Pence make an important point. Silence emboldens hate. Giving extremists a seat at the table helps normalize antisemitism. It can put Jews in physical danger. We cannot stay silent.
We condemn these extremist outrages and call on political leaders, businesses, celebrities and individuals across the country to join us in rejecting these messengers of hate and relegate them to the dustbin of history where they belong.
Thank you for being part of the ADL community and for speaking out loud and clear against hate.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Greenblatt
