From The Desk of Thomas McKenna: The
State of Abortion in America
Dear Friend,
We’ve spoken in previous emails about the hard work that
awaits us after the Supreme Court’s Hobbs decision which
overturned Roe v. Wade. After taking a few weeks
to analyze and reflect on this past election, it is
abundantly clear from the results that
abortion isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
We should not delude ourselves into
thinking either 1/ that Hobbs ended abortion
in this country or 2/ that the grassroots battle from here on out will
be a cakewalk. We need a constant wakeup call: Hobbs sent the issue back to the states, and some states are so
dominated by pro-abortion machines that they are vulnerable to the
most extreme abortion measures, the kinds that even Roe v. Wade never envisioned.
Case in point: In the past
election, Montana, Kentucky, Michigan, California, and Vermont voters
all went full demonic in backing aggressive measures of abortion
“rights”.
Whether it was enshrining abortion
in the state’s constitution (MI, CA), or legitimizing it in state law
(VT), or rejecting even the slightest restrictions on the killing of
innocents in current laws (MT, KY), it’s clear that some state
populations in our beloved country actually worship
abortion.
I am not exaggerating. The Book of
Wisdom spoke of this spiritual phenomenon more than two thousand years
ago:
It was the wicked who with
hands and words invited death,
considered it a friend, and
pined for it,
and made a covenant with
it,
Because they deserve to be
allied with it. (Wis
1:16)
Some states are actively making a
covenant with death. It’s frightening and sad to see this happen to
our nation, and it will have catastrophic consequences for our nation
as time goes on.
At the same time, we at Catholic
Action are never ones to despair. We see fervent signs of hope for our
nation that we should both be thankful for and support to the greatest
extent possible.
For example, I received the
following bit of information recently which put things into
perspective for me about the state of abortion in America. While we
lament the very existence of abortion, we must also recognize the
progress that has been made:
-
Roe v. Wade has been overturned after almost fifty
years.
- Thirteen states now have total or
very comprehensive abortion bans.
- More abortion bans are coming to
states.
- 10,000+ babies have already been
saved.
-
88 abortion clinics have closed (that
we know of).
- Every pro-life governor was
re-elected.
-
Nancy Pelosi has been
fired.
-
There are now more pro-life
legislatures, and…More pro-life
state courts.
And in another positive
development, a recent study found that many singles claim to have
changed their dating behavior (for the better) since
the Hobbs ruling. Interesting.
So here we are: members of a
divided nation, fighting the good fight. Despite the setbacks, we try
to maintain an extremely hopeful perspective: our nation as a whole is
not defined by the evil people who push abortion or the individual
states that worship the devil’s sacrament. We know that.
America remains a majority pro-life
nation, and because of the baptismal promises we renew every Easter –
to “reject Satan and all his works and all his empty promises” – we
will never stop fighting to uproot the institution and reality of
abortion from our midst.
