CCL Australia: Time to wake
up to 'catastrophe unfolding' and price carbon
The new year began with frightening news coming from Australia: an unprecedented bushfire season has claimed dozens of human lives, millions of animal lives, and thousands of homes. “Tragically, we now have a disaster serious enough to wake up almost all of us to the catastrophe that is unfolding,” said Rod Mitchell, the national director of CCL Australia. “Australia needs to know that our government is responding appropriately to both the immediate emergency and to the climate and ecological crisis that is escalating before our eyes,” Rod said. He and other members of CCL Australia will continue to push hard for carbon pricing policy to address the climate change making these fires worse. “All of us at CCL are keeping our Australian volunteers, their loved ones, and their entire country in our thoughts during this crisis,” Executive Director Mark Reynolds said. “We will continue to offer them love, encouragement and solidarity as we work together to address the global challenge of climate change.”
Other news this week: Remembering Marshall: Over the holidays, the CCL family received the sad news that founder Marshall Saunders had passed away. E&E News published an excellent obituary, as did the Coronado Times. RESULTS founder and CCL mentor Sam Daley-Harris paid tribute to Marshall in an op-ed in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Sam has given permission for anyone to submit his piece to their local newspaper. You can express condolences and share remembrances of Marshall on our memorial page on CCL Community. Conservative momentum on climate: Conservative Outreach Director Jim Tolbert has an op-ed in The Hill about Republican engagement on climate change in Congress. If you’re a conservative and would like to participate in CCL’s Conservative Climate Lobby Day (Feb. 3-4), the deadline to register is Jan. 13. Learn more. |
