Hi John,
It will be a busy week on Capitol Hill.
Immigration Bill Up for Vote
Thursday, the House will vote on the EAGLE Act, a bill that would up-end the green card process and add years of additional wait for green card seekers from Iran and many other countries. We oppose this bill because it harms diverse immigrant communities and subjects Iranian nationals to a painful, years-long wait in the green card backlog. Learn more and take action on that issue here [[link removed]] .
Committees Debate Iran Protest Resolutions
Thanks to your critical advocacy, the foreign affairs committees in the House and Senate will debate and vote on legislation commending the bravery of the people of Iran, condemning Iran’s brutal crackdown, calling for targeted human rights sanctions and urging steps to expand internet access. NIAC Action has consulted on and endorsed these resolutions, and are the most comprehensive that have been put forward since the outbreak of protests in September.
Time is running out to pass these resolutions before the New Year, and a new session of Congress, so it is a big win for these bills to be moving forward now. This isn’t all - Congress will also be finalizing its work on the National Defense Authorization Act, which could include provisions related to Iran.
NIAC will be monitoring the debates closely on Tuesday [[link removed]] and Wednesday [[link removed]] , and working to ensure that no legislator succeeds in trying to hijack the resolutions with their own agendas. If you haven’t done so yet, please encourage your legislators to cosponsor the protest resolutions here [[link removed]] .
Stay tuned in to our messages going forward and take action through the buttons below if you’re looking to do more. We’ll do our best to keep you up to date going forward and to amplify the voices of Iranian Americans and allies of peace, human rights, and diplomacy.
