You probably know that the Amazon rainforest serves as a major “lung” for the world, capturing and converting two billion tons of atmosphere-choking carbon dioxide each year. But did you know that Africa’s Congo Basin plays a similar role? It does, and now that region is under threat from rapid urbanization, agricultural expansion, and degradation from climate change.

To better understand the threats facing Africa’s natural areas—and the possible solutions—Foreign Policy is partnering with the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) to host a discussion on Wednesday, December 7th at 10 a.m. EST with experts, advocates, policymakers, and funders. Join us to learn more about the current state of affairs, and the ways in which Africans can serve as stewards of this critical component of our planet’s atmosphere and climate.

Register now to join the discussion, featuring:
  • Hailemariam Dessalegn, Former Prime Minister of Ethiopia
  • Paulo Gomes, Founder, Orango Investment Corporation, Former Executive Director at the World Bank
  • Monica P. Medina, Assistant Secretary, Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, U.S. Department of State
  • Carol Pineau, Filmmaker and Journalist
  • Kaddu Kiwe Sebunya, CEO, African Wildlife Foundation (AWF)
  • Andrew Steer, President & CEO, Bezos Earth Fund
Registered participants will have the opportunity to submit questions and engage in the conversation using #AfricaForward.
