John,
Today Sir Keir Starmer launched the long awaited Brown Report on
constitutional reform.
It is expected that many of the
recommendations in this report will make it into the Labour manifesto
for the next General Election.
There’s just one
problem…
The report doesn’t mention electoral reform!
That’s right, in over 150 pages,
there isn’t one reference to binning Britain’s discredited
First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system which more often than not
hands total power to the Tories with a minority of
votes.
Shockingly, FPTP is only used for
national elections by one other European country - BELARUS!
Reform of the House of Lords is
important, but without addressing this critical flaw in our democratic
system, Starmer
is fixing the roof while the foundations rot.
Strangely, the Brown Report does
recommend restoring proportional systems for Mayoral and local
elections after the Tories got rid of them through the Elections Act.
If Proportional Representation (PR) is good enough for local
elections, why not for deciding who leads the country?
You, and thousands of other Best for Britain supporters, have
taken part in the Can't
Wait campaign this year. You highlighted the stories of people
like Ceri, Frank and Sandra who are dealing with the effects of 12
years of Tory government every day and helped convince Labour Party
members and affiliated unions to support PR for national elections in the
UK. Sandra, Ceri and Frank can't wait another five years for the
election after next. They need a government that will fix the system
for them now.
Let’s keep the pressure
up.
