Each of these leaders have dedicated their careers to furthering LGBTQ equality, fighting bravely for progress. Take a look:
Tamara Adrián is a Deputy in Venezuela’s National Assembly, lawyer and civil rights advocate. She made history in 2015 when she became the first out trans person elected in Venezuela and only the second out trans person elected to a national legislature in the Western Hemisphere. She has served on numerous LGBTQ boards, organized days of recognition for LGBTQ rights and movements for equality and challenged anti-trans laws in the Venezuelan courts, as well as being an active participant in many of the legal movements in the country addressing LGBTQ equality.
Ron Oden has a long history of community activism and political service in Palm Springs. In 1995, he won election as a City Councilmember. In November 2003, he was elected Mayor of Palm Springs, becoming the first Black out LGBTQ person elected mayor of any U.S. city. Ron championed embracing Palm Springs’ past and LGBTQ community and, as Mayor, focused on expanding diversity while leading the city’s first LGBTQ majority on the City Council. Under his leadership, the city turned into a top tourist destination and experienced unprecedented growth.
Amanda Simpson currently serves as the Vice President of Research and Technology at Airbus America. During her notable and extensive career, she has served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Operational Energy, Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Defense for matters pertaining to military and energy, among others. In 2010, Ms. Simpson was appointed by President Barack Obama to the position of Senior Technical Adviser to the U.S. Department of Commerce, where she advised on policy and export control issues necessary to protect the security of the United States. With her appointment, she became the first out transgender female presidential appointee in U.S. history.
First elected to the New York City Council in 1999, Christine Quinn passionately advocated for LGBTQ equality, equal access to city services, housing services, health care services and security and more. She was chosen by her colleagues to be Speaker of the Council in 2006, becoming the first woman and first out LGBTQ speaker in city history. During her time as Speaker, Christine championed LGBTQ issues, including pushing the New York Senate to pass marriage equality in 2009, vowing that her and her partner would not get married until they did so. Since leaving the City Council due to term limits, Christine has continued to advocate for expanding LGBTQ rights and expanding city services.
