Emptier Plates: HFA's Annual Survey Garners Nationwide Media Attention

Every year, Hunger Free America releases our annual survey on hunger in America. This year we were joined by Members of Congress and leading anti-hunger advocates at events around the country.
You can check out all of the great coverage of HFA's events, including Joel's interview with Spectrum News NY1's Errol Louis, below.
Media Coverage of HFA's Events
This year, food hardship is up 30% nationally in America compared to 2021. With the impact of inflation and the expiration of expanded Child Tax Credits and universal school meals, nearly three fourths of soup kitchens have seen an increase in people they serve since last year.

We were honored that as part of our event in Idaho, Boise Mayor Lauren McLean declared November 21, 2022 Hunger Free Boise Day.

Our annual survey shows, once again, why HFA's work is vital. As Americans continue to struggle against hunger and food insecurity, our team works to connect families with resources like SNAP and WIC, and advocate for policies that will lift people out of poverty.

Indiana University Students Making a Difference This Thanksgiving
Over their Thanksgiving break, five dedicated students from Indiana University visited Hunger Free America's headquarters in New York for a week of service. They distributed information about food resources in the community and worked with our partners to help people access nutritious food during the holiday. We are grateful for their service.

Hunger Hotline: A Closer Look

The USDA National Hunger Hotline is a resource operated by Hunger Free America to connect individuals and families to emergency food providers and social services.

This month the hotline received 2,174 calls from 53 different states/territories.

1,328 of callers were referred to SNAP resources, 690 and 511 were connected to a local food pantry or food bank (respectively), and 342 callers were referred to Pandemic EBT (P-EBT).

If you need help, call: 1-866-3-HUNGRY or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (for Spanish)
representatives are available Monday - Friday from 7:00 am - 10:00 pm.

Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids
Here at HFA we are advocating for an important piece of legislation that will deliver a comprehensive, science-driven reauthorization of federal child nutrition programs that meets the needs of children and families.

The bill would:
  • Expand access to school meals
  • Preserve the future of school meal programs
  • Modernize the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
  • Provide additional funding to the USDA's Hunger Hotline, managed by Hunger Free America
  • Address food insecurity during the summer
  • Improve school meal capacity and sustainability
  • Strengthen the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)
