POV Acquires Oscar-shortlisted "Advocate"

As reported exclusively in Screen Daily, POV announced the acquisition of the U.S. broadcast rights for the critically-acclaimed and award-winning documentary feature Advocate from directors Rachel Leah Jones and Philippe Bellaiche. It is one of the 15 titles on the shortlist for a nomination for this year’s documentary feature Oscar.

America ReFramed Co-Production "Jaddoland" Wins Independent Spirit Award

Jaddoland, directed by Nadia Shihab, received an Independent Spirit Award in the "Truer Than Fiction" category. The award is presented to an emerging non-fiction filmmaker and includes a $25,000 unrestricted grant. Earlier this year, WORLD Channel announced Jaddoland as the first of its 2020 co-productions and will present the film as part of the upcoming America ReFramed season.

 Documentary Community Supports Oscar-shortlisted Filmmaker and POV Alumni Feras Fayyad

Syrian-born director Feras Fayyad, director of Oscar-nominated film The Last Men in Aleppo, was denied a visa to enter the U.S., just hours before learning his documentary The Cave made the 92nd Academy Awards shortlist. In response, the International Documentary Association wrote to the State Department urging the government "to reverse this arbitrary decision." The letter was signed by IDA executive director and former POV executive director Simon Kilmurry, as well as supporters from organizations like American Documentary, Sundance Institute, Kartemquin Films and many others.

Apply to The 2020 On Air Audio Residency taking place in Brooklyn, New York. This residency supports one audio artist to create new work and premiere it at On Air Fest with a 5-night stay at Wythe Hotel, a stipend and more. Applications are due on January 17.

The application and guidelines for the Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship will open no later than February 4. This program provides two years of support for artists to create new work and/or pursue artistic and career development opportunities.

The Enterprise Production Grant is now accepting applications until March 1. Filmmakers can apply for up to $100,000 in production grant support for feature-length documentary projects. Contact [email protected] with additional questions.
