Iran Suspends Morality Police Responsible for Sparking Mass Protests
Bloomberg: The operations of Iran’s “morality police” have effectively been suspended, a top official said, after months of widespread anti-government protests over the death of a young woman in its custody. Officially called the Guidance Patrol, the police unit has for years stalked major intersections and thoroughfares in Iranian cities, arresting those it determined were flouting the Islamic Republic’s strict religious dress codes ( Bloomberg). Financial Times: Street demonstrations erupted in September after the Guidance Patrol, a branch of the morality police, stopped Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman, in the capital Tehran for allegedly failing to properly observe the hijab. Her death in police custody triggered protests in towns and cities across Iran that spiralled into the worst social unrest in years and led to calls for the theocratic state to be overthrown and replaced with a secular government ( Financial Times).

Elon Musk Reveals Twitter Suppressing Tweets Surrounding Hunter Biden
USA Today: Elon Musk promoted a series of tweets Friday that shows Twitter executives struggled with handling tweets surrounding a report on Hunter Biden’s laptop before the 2020 presidential election as the company took steps to block it. Musk, who last month urged his followers to vote for Republicans, seemed to push the material to expose what he claims is the political left’s grip over Big Tech ( USA Today). Fox News: Liberal pundits rushed to discredit a bombshell Twitter thread from Elon Musk and Substack journalist Matt Taibbi revealing the internal communications of Twitter employees and U.S. lawmakers surrounding the censorship of the New York Post’s Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020 ( Fox News). Daily Wire: House Republicans will work to bring in “every” single employee involved in efforts to restrict the spread of reporting about the Hunter Biden laptop ahead of the 2020 election, an incoming chairman for a powerful committee vowed on Friday ( Daily Wire).

New York Social Media Law Violates Free Speech
Eugene Volkoh: So the law will mandate that I post publicly my policy for responding to comments that “vilify, humiliate, or incite violence against a group” based on “race, color, religion, ethnicity, national origin, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.” It also requires that I give readers a way to complain about my blog’s content and obligates me to respond directly. I don’t want to moderate such content and I don’t endorse the state’s definition of hate speech. Still, I’m being conscripted. By obligating me to do the state’s bidding with regard to viewpoints that New York condemns, the law violates the First Amendment ( Wall Street Journal). National Review: The response to this from any self-respecting American must be no less than, “Oh yeah — how about you shove it?” What the private owners of social networks, blogs, message boards, and so forth choose to do with their users’ content is up to them, not to the State of New York — or any other government ( National Review).

303 Creative Fights for 1st Amendment Freedom Before Supreme Court Today
Fox News: Lorie Smith is a business owner, who says she puts her Christian faith above financial profit. However, her efforts to manage both have put Smith in conflict with Colorado officials over the limits of workplace speech, an issue the Supreme Court will address in high-profile oral arguments. At issue is a private company’s refusal to create any website for a same-sex wedding, despite a state’s “public accommodation” law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation ( Fox News). Alliance Defending Freedom: A Colorado law is censoring what Lorie wants to say and requiring her to create designs that violate her beliefs about marriage ( Alliance Defending Freedom). Scotusblog: T he justices will hear oral argument in 303 Creative v. Elenis, a clash between free speech rights and LGBTQ rights ( Scotusblog).

China Lightly Scales Back Covid Restrictions on Citizens
Wall Street Journal: Local authorities across China are paring back some of their strictest Covid-19 control measures, just days after public anger spilled over into rare protests against a zero-tolerance approach that has kept the country largely isolated for three years. In recent days, officials in major cities—including Beijing and other areas where protests broke out a week ago—said they were lifting some curbs on residents’ movements, such as by ending mandatory Covid testing for people who want to use public transport or enter parks and other public spaces ( Wall Street Journal). Financial Times: During a closed-door meeting with European officials on Thursday, Xi acknowledged the protests that rocked cities across the country last weekend, according to two European officials with knowledge of the talks ( Financial Times).

Colorado Seeks to Intensify Gun Control Laws
Colorado Sun: A host of changes to Colorado’s gun laws, from a ban on so-called assault weapons to tweaks to the existing red flag law, are already being considered by Democrats at the state Capitol in response to the shooting last month at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs. Democrats will return to the Colorado Capitol in early January with expanded majorities in both the House and Senate and facing pressure to act after the state’s latest mass shooting ( Colorado Sun). Townhall: In 2020, Colorado passed a law that allows law enforcement, family or household members to file a petition asking a court to take away gun rights from a person who poses a significant risk to themselves or others. The Associated Press found that majority of residents are against this law and several law enforcement agents declared they won’t enforce it because it infringes upon Americans Second Amendment rights ( Townhall).

Los Angeles City Council Unanimously Votes to Ban Drilling New Oil, Gas Wells As Well As Gradually Eliminate Current Sites
Fox News: The Los Angeles City Council on Friday voted unanimously to ban drilling new oil and gas wells and phase out the use of existing ones over the next 20 years. Council members celebrated the vote as a victory for “environmental justice.” But opponents worried the new rules could mean job losses and higher gas prices. Los Angeles already has among the highest gas prices in the nation at $4.89 per gallon for regular gas, well above the national average of $3.43 ( Fox News). LA Times: In an October letter to city officials, the California Independent Petroleum Assn., a trade group representing over 300 independent crude oil and natural gas producers, disputed claims of “detrimental health effects” from oil and gas drilling and production operations. The group also pointed to a June 2020 study by Capitol Matrix Consulting that estimated the oil and gas industry brings in about $250 million to the city’s general funds ( LA Times).

LA County Draws Closer to Reinstituting Mask Mandates
Washington Examiner: Los Angeles County, which had some of the country’s strictest COVID-19 mandates during its yearlong California lockdown in 2020, is poised to return to mandatory mask mandates. The largest county in the United States is amid a COVID-19 surge that has placed transmission levels at “medium,” with 2,490 new infections every day, said Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Currently, the county has 185 cases per 100,000 people, and if the number reaches 200 infections, that would prompt a move into the “high” level ( Washington Examiner). Just the News: The CDC took nearly two years to formally recognize distinctions between masks for mitigating COVID-19 spread, finally saying in January that cloth masks offer “the least” protection and N95 respirators, which meet strict federal standards, “the highest” ( Just the News).

Disney Announces Termination of Historic Ride Due to Racism
National Review: Disney announced the official closing date for its iconic Splash Mountain attraction this week, more than two years after the company first said it planned to close the ride over its perpetuation of “racial stereotypes.” Splash Mountain, which is based on the movie Song of the South, will close on January 23, 2023. The film has come under fire in recent years for its portrayal of plantation life. The company announced in June 2020 that it planned to reimagine the ride at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which is set one year after the end of the movie The Princess and the Frog. A petition to save Splash Mountain in the wake of Disney’s first announcement garnered more than 93,000 signatures. In contrast, a 2019 petition calling for the attraction’s closure received more than 21,000 signatures ( National Review). So the ride is racist, yet they are not closing it immediately? If something was truly racist, it should immediately be put to an end. If it were truly racist, why are people who ride the attraction, or the park it exists in, not labeled racist? Seems like pandering.
