Dear John,

It’s the year 2020 — and that means we have just ten years to radically transform our economy to
prevent the worst impacts of climate change. This will be the most important decade for climate action in human history , according to leading climate scientists.

But radical change doesn’t happen without radical action: That’s why I’m asking
you to run into the icy cold Potomac River with me and 200 other intrepid
climate activists.

Please join me at National Harbor on January 25 for our 15th annual “Keep Winter
Cold” Polar Bear Plunge. Help raise funds crucially needed to address the
climate challenges we face.

What a way to welcome in this new — and critically important — decade! Each
winter, hundreds of area climate activists gather on the beach at National
Harbor and brave the freezing cold Potomac River. (Note: you can just wade in
part way if you want, or go all the way in. It’s up to you!)

By doing this, we draw attention to the scope of the climate crisis while
raising tens of thousands of dollars that will enable the Chesapeake Climate
Action Network and our partners to continue winning climate victories in our MD,
VA, and DC region.

After the plunge, we’ll warm up and celebrate our awesomeness at the after-party
in McLoone’s Pier House — where food and hot drinks will flow!

And don’t worry: There is still plenty of time to get people to sponsor you and
raise funds. Two-thirds of Plunge fundraising happens in January! We hope you’ll register as soon as possible and start your fundraising - it’s
simple to do and it’s a fantastic way to make a concrete impact on local climate
action.

We have set ambitious goals for this first year of this crucial decade:

* In Maryland, we will keep our state fracking-free, and fight to stop the
build-out of any new fossil fuel infrastructure.
* In Washington, DC we will continue to fight for climate justice — including making sure that the ground-breaking Clean Energy DC legislation
CCAN helped to win is implemented in a strong and fair way.
* In Virginia, where we're battling piplines, a judge threw out a necessary
permit for construction of an Atlantic Coast Pipeline compressor station in
Buckingham County! We will continue the fight to keep these pipelines from
ever coming online.

But we really need you with us to make all of this happen. Please Plunge with us,
[[link removed]] or donate to support our team.
[[link removed]] We have accomplished so much in the last few years. But we have a very long way
to go to assure that our planet and its ecosystems are safe for our children and
our children’s children. On Saturday, January 25 we will reconfirm our intention
to do just that. Let’s win this together.

In Solidarity,

Mike Tidwell
Executive Director
Chesapeake Climate Action Network

PS: This year we will be joined by long-time MD climate activists and musicians
Rick Sullivan, Jeff Weisner and Kipyn Martin who have formed a new climate music
Trio, The Sunshiners! The Sunshiners mission is to compose and perform Climate
Action-themed music. This will be one of the Sunshiners first public appearances
and they will be producing a CD in the near future.
