Dear Comrades,
This upcoming Tuesday, December 6th, the City Council Utility Committee will meet for the first time in months, where Entergy will speak before the Council after raking in unprecedented profits, even while the shutoff moratorium was in place. Entergy is making money hand over fist – more than it’s legally allowed – yet it is threatening 20,000 New Orleans residents with shutoffs over $11 million in debt — a rounding error compared to its $1.2 billion in profits. The Council must act, and it has the power to act, but they won’t unless we demand action.
We need our members to turn out to the meeting on Tuesday to demand a permanent shutoff moratorium, and to inform our elected officials that we will not allow Entergy to exploit New Orleans residents with odious debt and predatory fees. The City Council has the power to forgive all $11 million of that debt, and we need to make sure they can’t hide behind excuses — it’s time to wipe it out.
Please contact your city council member to ask them to reinstate the moratorium immediately, and then join us at the meeting starting next Tuesday, December 6th at 10AM to make sure our demands won’t be ignored.
Monday (tomorrow), help us make sure our councilmembers’ phones are ringing off the hook with residents demanding No More Shutoffs and No More Debt. Sign up for a time to call during our phone zap here!
Stay tuned to our socials for updates on public comments for the Utility Committee meeting, and for updates from the council on Tuesday. We hope to see you in the chambers!
In Solidarity,
New Orleans DSA
