Team,
It’s time for a celebration! The U.S. Senate passed the ‘Respect for Marriage Act,’ and it is now heading to the House for final approval.
After decades of fighting for marriage equality, LGBTQ+ and interracial couples have their marriages codified in federal law.
In celebrating this historic event, let us honor the people who courageously and at risk to their safety fought for this day to come.
From facing down hatred at Stonewall in 1969 to pressing for civil unions in the 1990s, and then taking their cause to the Supreme Court in 2013 and 2015, this legislative victory is a direct result of their tireless commitment to equality for all.
I’m proud to be an ally on this and other issues of justice, fairness, and equality.
While this is a history-changing moment and a cause for celebration, our work for a more equitable American union is far from over. Voices on the extreme right want to end the progress we’re making while spouting hatred and prejudice.
That’s why I’m so impressed by millions of young people across America stepping up to meet this moment. They refuse to allow the past to dictate their present — and future.
It’s essential that Democrats continue embracing and working with young people who care deeply about these issues. We must ensure their voices and concerns are heard through the ballot box.
