WASHINGTON — In response to the passing of former Republican Arizona Congressman Jim Kolbe, Freedom House president Michael J. Abramowitz issued the following statement:
“Jim Kolbe was an outstanding lawmaker who operated with deep integrity, decency and civility and sought alliances across the political divides. He tackled many of the most challenging issues of our time, including immigration, the environment and LGBT+ rights. He was a fierce champion of democratic values and human rights, and he was generous with his wisdom.
“Freedom House was incredibly fortunate to benefit from the knowledge and guidance he graciously offered as a member of our Board of Trustees. He was a straight shooter and trusted confidante who will be deeply missed by all of us at Freedom House.
“Our thoughts are with his husband, Hector, and all those who loved him.”
