Hi there --
There are a lot of reasons that we focus on state and local elections -- for one, I hate to let the GOP win anything as easily as they've won these seats over the last decade. But another huge reason is that Democratic state legislatures don't have to deal with Washington gridlock in order to make policy changes. They can just... enact new legislation.
Take Virginia, where the Democrats -- including some of our very own alum! -- now control both state chambers and the governor's office. The legislature is pushing some pretty huge policy changes right now, including expanding voting access, protecting abortion rights, and preventing gun violence.
Mitch McConnell doesn't have any say over whether the Virginia state legislature bans assault-style rifles -- so they might be able to actually do it. How fucking great is that?
If you care about expanding access to health care or protecting the right to vote or actually doing something about climate change, electing progressive local and state candidates is the smartest investment you can make right now. Why wait?
