John,
On December 6th, just two days from now, Georgians are voting in a U.S. Senate runoff election between Senator Raphael Warnock and his challenger, Herschel Walker. This election could have major consequences for Social Security’s future.
The Democratic Party, which created Social Security, wants to protect and expand benefits. Republican elites in Washington, who call Social Security an “entitlement,” want to cut its vital but modest benefits – or even end Social Security as we know it.
Fight for Social Security’s future by splitting a contribution of $5 between Social Security Works and Warnock’s campaign today.
Walker has proudly campaigned with and taken money from Senator Rick Scott (R-FL). Scott recently authored a plan that would put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block every five years. Not to be outdone, another prominent Republican, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), has a plan to put Social Security on the chopping block every single year.
What would those cuts look like? The Republican Study Committee, a group that counts about 75 percent of House Republicans as members, released a detailed plan to cut Social Security in multiple ways: Raising the retirement age to 70 (a 21 percent benefit cut), slashing middle class benefits, and handing billions of dollars of Social Security's revenue over to Wall Street and private insurance corporations.
How would they enact these changes? Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy has threatened to take the must-pass debt limit hostage next summer. Congressional Republicans will refuse to raise it unless Democrats agree to cut Social Security and Medicare. Shockingly, Republicans in Congress want to cut our earned benefits so badly, they're willing to risk an economic catastrophe to make it happen.
If Herschel Walker is elected, he will rubber stamp the Republican agenda to force cuts to Social Security’s earned benefits.
In sharp contrast, Senator Warnock, in his two years in the Senate, has been a champion for seniors. He was part of the winning vote to finally allow Medicare to negotiate with Big Pharma to lower drug prices, cap the cost of insulin for Medicare beneficiaries, and limit overall out-of-pocket expenditures on prescription drugs.
We need Senator Warnock to stay in the Senate, fighting to protect our earned Social Security benefits. Split a contribution of $5 between Warnock’s campaign and Social Security Works today.
Moreover, if Georgians re-elect Senator Warnock, Democrats will have a 51-seat majority in the U.S. Senate. With 51 Senate seats instead of their current 50, Democrats would have a true majority, instead of a power-sharing agreement where ties are broken by the vice president. That means they would have full control of key committees, and a much easier path to confirming nominees who will fight for working people and seniors.
Social Security is as reliable as it is essential. Through pandemics, wars, and economic recessions, Social Security has always continued to reliably pay monthly benefits, allowing its beneficiaries and their families to pay rent, buy food, and fill life-saving prescriptions.
Senator Warnock understands that Americans of all political backgrounds rely on our earned Social Security benefits, and supports protecting and expanding them. He knows how important Social Security benefits are for the people of Georgia, both now and in the future.
Our Social Security system unites all of us. It is a crucial instrument for racial and economic justice, and it is too important to gamble on Herschel Walker. If we want to stop Republicans from holding the global economy hostage to force cuts to our earned benefits, Raphael Warnock is the only choice.
