Washington’s wasteful spending sprees are no secret. But it’s not enough to identify the problem. We have to do something about it. It’s time for Republicans to crack down on pork-barrel projects and special-interest giveaways. Not only are they a waste of taxpayer money, earmarks are used as bait to convince members to vote for bloated spending bills—like what could be a $3.3 trillion blowout in the upcoming weeks. And you know what out-of-control spending bills lead to? Out-of-control inflation and more money added to our soaring national debt. How bad is the earmark problem? Take a look at some of the latest absurd earmark requests: - A $1.1 million solar array in Kirkland, Washington—one of the least sunny places in the country.
- $1.5 million to promote eating outdoors in Pasadena, CA—one of the sunniest places in the country.
- $1.6 million for the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain in Vermont. The center is named after Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), and he had the audacity to request the earmark.
Our country is looking to us for solutions, and Republicans should provide them. That starts with reining in wasteful spending like earmarks. Let me know what you think about earmarks by submitting your thoughts here. My very best,
