John,
Incidents of domestic violence have risen during the pandemic, and people have even fewer resources to leave abusive situations. More and more families are also facing homelessness, including in my city of Detroit—one of the country’s most impoverished big cities.
We must do more to protect parents and children in these precarious situations, and an incredible organization in my community is doing just that.
Sara’s House/Place serves pregnant teens and women who are homeless or low-income, many of whom have experienced or are escaping domestic violence or sexual abuse.
If you can afford to, please donate to Sara’s House/Place today to help young homeless parents access resources and compassionate community.
Sara’s House/Place holds regular community baby showers and skills-based workshops for homeless or low-income moms-to-be, many of whom are teens or young women. One participant said: “I felt a little ashamed and embarrassed of being pregnant, but [they] welcomed me with open arms, and I felt supported.”
From the organization’s parenting classes, she got trained on vehicle safety with babies and how to use car seats, which was the first time someone went over how to do that with her.
She said that having that “community behind me… gave me strength to pursue my dreams and get my degree, then to get a better job and now be a homeowner as a single mom. Those are some big accomplishments and Sara’s House was a part of that for me.”
Now that she has reached a safe and stable point, she comes back to volunteer with Sara’s House/Place. She is giving back to her community, supporting and empowering other survivors who are still on their own journeys to thriving independently.
As part of providing resources to new parents in need, Sara’s House/Place also brings supplies (such as car seats, diapers, strollers, coats, boots, and toys) to families in homeless shelters.
Unfortunately, shelters usually only have nightly availability or interim housing, which give young families only a small window of time to reside there. But rebuilding one’s life takes time, so Sara’s House/Place is working toward providing transitional housing for women and children for a minimum of two years. Can you help them with this goal?
Please donate today so Sara’s House/Place can support young homeless families and pregnant people who are escaping domestic abuse.

Thank you,
Rashida
