Filters ON: Innovative Proposal to Protect Children Online Gains Momentum

Tired of navigating complicated safety filters on your kids' electronic devices?

Despairing at the seeming impossibility of preventing your kids from being exposed to pornography?

You're not alone. Many parents and caregivers feel the same way. Which is why NCOSE is advocating for a solution to these woes: The Device Filter Bill!

The Device Filter Bill, first passed by Utah in 2021, requires smartphones and tablets to automatically turn on filters blocking pornography when the device is activated. Should an adult wish to turn off the filters on their device, they can easily do so with a simple password change or toggle system.

The Device Filter Bill alleviates the stress and confusion caregivers experience when searching for these hard-to-find filters on their own. It also ensures all children are protected, even those who do not have the privilege of highly involved, tech-savvy parents.

The Daily Signal: Balenciaga Scandal Highlights Rampant Sexualization of Children and Larger Porn Issue, Expert Says

Recently, the luxury fashion brand Balenciaga has sparked public outcry over an ad campaign that featured toddlers holding teddy bears wearing bondage harnesses. The Daily Signal interviewed Lisa Thompson, NCOSE's Vice President of Research, on this topic:

Thompson says the ads are representative of an ongoing issue within culture that normalizes pornographic images.

“Those who are expressing outrage, I think are doing so very rightly,” Thompson said, but added that this “isn’t the first time we’ve had situations like this where children are being hypersexualized...The problem is there continue to be people who desire that content and people are willing and ready to consume it, and I think that’s a product of our pornified culture,” she said, adding that use of adult pornography can lead to the use of child porn.

If Elon Musk is Serious About Confronting Child Exploitation, He Must Shut Down Idea of An OnlyFans Competitor

Elon Musk recently indicated that his top priority is to remove child sexual abuse material from Twitter. However, to reach this goal, he needs to quash the idea of creating an OnlyFans competitor and to implement a robust system to stop child predators on Twitter.

Reports from earlier this month noted that Musk is eager to ‘fast track’ an OnlyFans-like feature that would allow content creators to charge for content – with Twitter getting a cut. Many experts, including Twitter’s own analysts, warn that this type of feature would be high-risk and most likely used to monetize sexually explicit content – which would likely include child sex abuse material (CSAM). This is a major problem given Twitter’s current inability to sufficiently detect and remove CSAM.

Thinking of doing some Holiday Shopping on Etsy?

As we enter into the Holiday Season, many of us have gift shopping on the brain.

One crowd favorite for buying creative gifts for loved ones is the online marketplace Etsy. Etsy is known for “unique and creative goods,” such as handmade and vintage products. Unfortunately, what many don't know is that Etsy also provides a platform for selling sexual exploitation.

NCOSE featured Etsy on the 2022 Dirty Dozen List for selling pornographic merchandise, image-based sexual abuse, childlike sex dolls, roleplay products that fetishized child sexual abuse, misogynistic apparel, and more (Read about the problems on Etsy here).

We love the way Etsy supports small businesses and provides a platform for creativity to thrive. But we want to see an exploitation-free Etsy!

Join us in calling on Etsy to remove sexually exploitative products from their platform!

Sincerely,
