We’re back, and boy has a lot happened in the first week of the year. This week, join us in opposing escalating conflict in Iran and a sham impeachment trial.

We are also gearing up for the 2020 elections! They’re coming very soon—the mail-in ballots for the primary election go out February 3rd.  We recommend that everyone check their voter registration, and we have some important announcements (see below) for voters with no party preference.

No War With Iran

In the first few days of 2020, on Trump’s orders, a civilian airport in Iraq was bombed, killing a top military official from Iran. This has been seen as an overt act of war, and pushes us closer than ever to war with Iran and further conflicts in the Middle East. Since then, the Trump administration has been openly advocating for conflict with Iran and Iraq, and escalation continues. We can’t afford more unjust, unauthorized, unending war.

Speaker Pelosi has said that the House will vote to limit Trump’s war powers. But that may not be enough for this lawless administration. Tell your MoC’s to do everything in their power to stop the escalation of this conflict.

Call your Representatives and Senators and tell them:

I'm calling because I'm concerned that the administration is trying to start a war in Iran without Congressional authorization, and that it's doing so not for national security reasons but merely to bolster Trump's re-election campaign.
[For Speaker Pelosi] I thank the Speaker for committing to a vote to limit Trump’s war powers.
I urge my Representative/Senator to
  • Vocally support limiting Trump’s war powers
  • Do everything possible to assert Congress's role as a co-equal branch of government,
  • Speak out against pressure to "fall in line behind the commander in chief"
  • Block this attempt to draw attention away from impeachment proceedings.

Please also join us at MoveOn’s event this Thursday protesting the escalation.

McConnell to proceed with impeachment trial vote in Senate without witnesses

Hot off the presses from Indivisible National: the Washington Post has reported that Mitch McConnell has the votes to force his witness-free sham impeachment trial through to the Senate. That means he could bring a vote on the rules as soon as the House sends over the articles, which could be as soon as tomorrow—unless we stop him.

Call your Senators and tell them:
The Washington Post has reported that Mitch McConnell has the votes to force his witness-free sham impeachment trial through to the Senate. I urge the Senator to vote AGAINST this. Americans deserve a free and fair impeachment trial with witnesses.

Heads up for voters in the upcoming Primary Election!

Can you believe that California’s primary election starts in one month? That’s right, mail-in ballots are being sent out in February.  We recommend the following preparatory actions:

First, you should check your voter registration. Yes, you. There have been voter registration mix-ups in several counties, such as Contra Costa, where people’s party preference was changed by a computer glitch to No Party Preference. Use the California Secretary of State’s website to make sure your voter registration is intact and correct right now!

Second, if you are registered as No Party Preference (whether you meant to be or not), your primary ballot will not have any of the Democratic Presidential candidates on it. As a voter registered with No Party Preference, if you want to vote in a primary for U.S. President, you must request a primary election ballot with a party’s presidential candidates.

The Democratic Party allows No Party Preference voters to participate in their Presidential Primary Elections, but you must request their ballot. If you live in San Francisco, you can do this online via the City’s Voter Portal.

Additionally, if you are interested in voting in the SF DCCC (county Democratic Party) election, you must re-register as a Democratic voter. You cannot vote in that election at all as a No Party Preference voter.

You should act on this ASAPmail-in ballots go out February 3rd.

Until February 18, 2020, you can change your party preference by re-registering online at https://registertovote.ca.gov/ or by submitting a paper registration application.

From February 19 through Election Day, March 3, 2020, you can change your party preference by registering conditionally at a voting center or polling place.

Check your voter registration status—it’s super easy and takes less than a minute at
https://voterstatus.sos.ca.gov/
