Dear John,

In the end, Cochise County, AZ Secessionists Caved. But it wasn't a foregone conclusion.

Yes, we had a preview of future elections playing out in our courts yesterday, and it is so important that I produced a video on the subject. After a week of defiance, the Cochise County Election Supervisors submitted to a court order and shared their election tallies with the state.

And in this particular case, had they not, it would've delivered a congressional seat and additional statewide office in Arizona to Democrats. Not what one might call a logical move. But cultists don't do logic.

The problem is--as is so often the case when a few Republicans do something completely bonkers--this is just the canary in the coal mine. A second Arizona County (Mohave) refused to submit at first, and one of its supervisors, when they gave in, said he was doing so "under duress" because he'd have been charged with a felony if he didn't. I guess we all walk around each day not grabbing anything we want from the local grocery store or appropriating that new convertible we always wanted "under duress."

And it wasn't just Arizona. As I documented, this also happened in Pennsylvania's Luzerne County too, where it took a lawsuit to force the county to share their vote tallies with the state. When does this simply become...secession?

Republicans control a lot of small counties, and I don't think any of us are naive enough to think this will stop here. The number of counties that try to pull something like this may quintuple--or more--with a presidential race at stake in 2024. And what happens if/when Republicans gain enough power to be nihilists in blue or purple counties where it wouldn't hurt their own candidates, but disenfranchises Democrats?

As I said, I did a video at my Blue Amp youtube channel on this dangerous development before Cochise County cried uncle (and, yes, I must admit as I joked in the video, would've served them right to lose a House seat because of their actions). It will, sadly, remain incredibly relevant, and I would love for you to check it out.

If you like it, subscribe to the channel so we can grow its voice and power.

Thank you!

Cliff

About BlueAmp Action:

We cannot sugarcoat the current situation. Right-wing authoritarianism, defeated by a worldwide coalition during WWII, was only in hibernation. Over the past decade it has infected democratic societies--including ours. It is as simple as it is terrifying: What we do now will define the future of our country and world.

We at Blue Amp Action are dedicated to liberal, open societies, where reason and science are applied to solve our problems; where civil rights--including voting rights!--are protected for all. We fight for these values every day. Speaking up on our platforms, raising the voices and the political prospects of liberal pols and pundits.

So we ask that you support our work, so we can continue to engage in this fight every moment of every day. So our kids grow up in democracy, not dystopia.

Thank you for your support for all we do! Please follow Cliff Schecter on Twitter @cliffschecter, or subscribe to The Takedown with Cliff Schecter on YouTube, to keep up to date with this battle for the heart and soul of our country.
