It's December, the holiday season has officially started, and if you’re going out shopping or celebrating in DC, you should expect to see more cadets and recruits out mingling with the community. Today, I was in Barracks Row to announce that the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is deploying more than 100 recruit officers and cadets from the MPD Academy to assist in neighborhoods and business corridors across the city. Cadets will be on foot patrol in our busiest corridors, and if you see them, say hello.
We want residents to have a safe and joyful holiday season. This deployment also gives our cadets another opportunity to engage directly with businesses and residents and understand how MPD can support the community.
We also want residents to know that no matter what comes up, we have people in our city ready to help. If you need assistance, if you witness something suspicious, or if you’re concerned about a mental health crisis – for yourself or someone else – help is just a phone call away. Remember and use these three important numbers:
- Call 311 to report non-emergencies like vandalism or disabled vehicles.
- Call 911 if you see suspicious activity, crimes in progress, or experience a medical emergency. You can also text 911 for help.
- Call 988 for confidential support if you or someone else is having a mental health emergency or is in suicidal crisis.

 On Saturday, December 3 at 10:00 a.m., Mayor Bowser is hosting the Together DC! Big Challenges & Bigger Ideas Engagement Forum for residents to share their ideas for confronting the District’s biggest challenges. Through three panels covering six topics – gun violence, democracy, education, reimagining downtown, fighting for the middle class, and building a sustainable, resilient future – the Mayor, Administration officials, and community leaders will lead discussions and engage residents on their big ideas for the future of DC.
Residents can RSVP for the engagement forum, which will be at Planet Word, and learn about other upcoming events by visiting together.dc.gov/events. Residents are invited to submit their big ideas for the next four years at together.dc.gov.
The Mayor also encourages Washingtonians to be a part of DC’s comeback by coming to work for the DC Government. Many open positions can be found at together.dc.gov/jobs.

 On Saturday, December 10, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Mayor Bowser, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), and My School DC will showcase DC Public Schools (DCPS) and public charter schools at the 2022 Virtual EdFEST, the District’s annual school fair. Now in its ninth year, EdFEST returns virtually to provide a one-stop shop for families to learn more about the District’s public school options.
The annual public school fair will take place just ahead of the opening of the My School DC application and lottery on Monday, December 12. The easy-to-use virtual platform will be familiar to the students and families who attended the event last year. Using an internet-connected device, students and families can log in and explore the city’s many public school options (PK3–Grade 12), get their questions answered directly by school representatives via video or chat, and learn about the public school lottery.
Language interpretation support is also free and provided in Spanish (Español), Amharic (አማርኛ፤), French (Français), Chinese (中文), Vietnamese (Tiếng Việt), and American Sign Language (ASL). Registration is required. For more information and to register, visit bit.ly/virtualedfest.

 The DC Department of Human Resources (DCHR) will host the DC Government Winter Hiring Fair on Thursday, December 8 and Friday, December 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Participating agencies will make on-the-spot job offers for vacancies in several industries, including health and human services, public safety, planning and economic development, internal services, and operations and infrastructure.
Registration is required and open until Monday, December 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Applicants will have the option of claiming additional preference if you are:
- A District resident
- A veteran (and/or has disabilities from military service)
- 18 to 21 years of age and is currently or was a Child and Family Services (CFSA) foster care recipient within the last five years
