It's a historic moment! For the first time in history, House Democrats have elected leaders who are all women and people of color. Among the new leaders is House Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries, who will be the first Black lawmaker to lead one of the two major parties in either chamber of Congress. This monumental move celebrates diversity and progress towards a more representative democracy where all voices are heard.

This year, 56 NAL alumni owned their power and potential in our democracy by running for office, winning, and becoming the leaders their communities need.

From school boards and city councils to state legislatures and Congress, NALpistas like Yadira Caraveo stepped up to run for office, becoming the first Latina to represent Colorado in Congress. In Alaska, Genevieve Mina decided to move from serving as a legislative aide and community advocate to running for office, becoming one of the youngest serving members of Alaska State House of Representatives. And in Ohio, Munira Abdullahi broke barriers as the first Somali American and Muslim woman ever elected to the Ohio state legislature.
