Notes from Mike's Desk from the Week of November 28 – December 2, 2022

Hello, friends! Welcome back to my newsletter highlighting what’s happening on Capitol Hill and in Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District. Thank you for subscribing and please consider recommending my newsletter to a friend.

IN THE HOUSE

In a split Congress with a Democrat in the White House, House Republicans will be providing a check on the Executive Branch – something Congress has not done for the past two years under Democrat control.

It’s imperative that the American people know how their government is working for them, and House Republicans plan to deliver those answers starting on day one.

As part of that effort, this week I joined my colleagues Rep. Jim Jordan and Rep. Darrell Issa in calling for interviews with top FBI officials regarding the politicization of the Bureau, evidenced by internal whistleblower documents. While the FBI has either ignored or declined previous inquiries from Congressional Republicans, our newly gained subpoena power should encourage cooperation and finally provide some transparency to the American people.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

In between votes on Wednesday, I caught up with students from Huntington High School in Shreveport who are taking part in the Close Up program here in Washington, D.C.

Since 1971, Close Up has provided a Washington civic experience to more than 900,000 participants giving them a firsthand look into the workings of our republic. I was here myself on the same trip in 1989.

Thank you to these students for braving the rain to meet with me on the Capitol steps!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Earlier this month, I was honored to sit for an extended interview with my friend, Dr. Jordan Peterson. As one of the most influential public intellectuals in the world, his podcast has one of the largest audiences. He posted our dialogue this week.

What a great opportunity this was to discuss the foundations and importance of our conservative philosophy. The simple truths are the most profound.

LAGNIAPPE

While we know the real “football” is played between two goal posts, all of us have been cheering on the red, white, and blue in the World Cup! After an exhilarating win vs. Iran on Tuesday, the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team will face the Netherlands Saturday morning in a round of 16 elimination games.

Good luck, lads!

Speaking of real football...The GA Congressmen are sending us nonsensical posts about tomorrow’s game. HA! I just reminded them the last time #LSU played GA in the #SECChampionship in 2019, the Tigers whipped the Dawgs 37–10…

…AND went on to win the National Championship, & the Heisman, & Coach of the Year, & more records than we can count. Oh, and many analysts believe that LSU team was the greatest in college football history.

Just sayin'.

I replied to my Dawg colleagues with this pic of my Burrow/Coach “O”/Ensminger helmet from that year.

But the coolest memento framed in my office is this record of the predictions we made on Air Force One on the way to the Superdome that season for the National Championship.

I won the challenge because I picked LSU to beat Clemson 41-27, and the final score was 42-25! President Trump signed to certify my win.

Among the friends who made other predictions were Congressman Ralph Abraham, Senators Tim Scott, Lindsey Graham and Jim Risch, and WH Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney.

LSU’s victory that day was the fourth national title in school history, and only the second 15–0 season of any team in the modern era.

We’re due to upset GA & win the SEC title again this year. #GeauxTigers
