The Office of Early Childhood ARPA funds press conference
Last week, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Ed Markey, Councilor Julia Mejia, and Mayor Michelle Wu joined the Office of Early Childhood at a press conference to announce the $5.6M in American Rescue Plan Act funds that will be allocated to support child care centers and essential workers’ access to early childhood programming. This funding includes $700K toward our Pilot program, which provides child care for families who work outside of the traditional 9 to 5 timeframe. These resources are a win not only for working-class parents but also for all the child care workers fighting for their labor to be honored not as a commodity or as charity but as a collective responsibility.

Celebrating women’s leadership in the labor movement: Past, present, and future
Join the Greater Boston Labor Council (GBLC), Massachusetts Labor Women’s Committee, and the Massachusetts AFL-CIO on December 8 for a reception honoring the 50th anniversary of the 9 to 5 movement! The impact women have made in labor history is often missing from textbooks and the media despite the significant roles women have played to organize, unionize, rally, document, and inspire workers to fight for justice. From championing better workplace conditions to cutting back the 12-hour day to demanding equal pay across racial lines – women’s work has always and will always power our labor movement.

Stand in solidarity with Starbucks workers and join their national day of action rally ([link removed]) on Friday, December 9 at the Boston Common. This rally marks the one year anniversary of the first union win of the campaign at a Starbucks in Buffalo, NY. Workers and allies will rally from coast to coast as a part of their National Day of Action to show Starbucks that we stand up to bullies! Speakers at the rally will include local Starbucks workers, teachers, and other union allies who know what it's like to stand up to bullies and fight for all workers’ rights, including women workers, workers of color, LGBTQ+ workers, and more!

Take action for zero waste in Massachusetts!
Massachusetts sent over 5 million tons of waste to landfills and incinerators in 2019, but millions of tons of that waste could have been recycled or composted. We must ensure that Massachusetts residents, businesses, and municipalities have the infrastructure, information, and incentives they need to reduce the amount of waste sent to be buried and burned in overburdened communities. Tell Governor-Elect Maura Healey to direct the MassDEP to take steps to reduce the amount of trash we bury and burn.

GreenRoots will be joining the Prince and Princess of Wales at the Earthshot Prize 2022 Awards in Boston as a host committee member this Friday! Earthshot Prize was designed to find and grow the solutions that will repair our planet within the decade. This year, we’re proud that the event will showcase Boston’s ongoing transformation towards sustainability. GreenRoots has been part of a powerful cohort of organizations supporting the Earthshot prize and the incredible slate of finalists. Congratulations to GreenRoots on this exciting opportunity!

Governor Baker signs Public Lands Preservation Act into law!
Environmental justice and conservation organizations, including our partner Clean Water Action, have fought for more than two decades to preserve our public lands, and now, they have helped us secure it as a priority in Massachusetts! Governor Baker recently signed the Public Lands Preservation Act (PLPA), ending a more than two decade effort to codify a policy of “no net loss” of public land. This is a huge victory in Massachusetts, and we are incredibly grateful for the hard work and perseverance of our fellow community organizations that have fought tooth and nail to protect our public lands.
