It’s easy to get lost in the headlines, but you may find there’s more beneath the surface to lend support to that optimistic streak Texans are known for.
A drone strike that sparks fears of World War III; seismic shocks rock Puerto Rico; political aftershocks as the presidential contest loses its second Texan … and 2020 is just getting started. Happy new year? It’s easy to get lost in the headlines, but if you dig a little deeper, you may find that there’s much more happening beneath the surface to lend support to that optimistic streak Texans are known for. While it’s early going, initial anxieties about conflict between the U.S. and Iran spiraling out of control are giving way to more sober-minded analyses. (Stay tuned to your local public radio station for the latest.) The 6.4 quake that struck Puerto Rico left one dead, but many said it could have been far worse (and with power outages reported, the U.S. territory still needs assistance). And although neither Julian Castro nor Beto O’Rourke will be advancing to the finals in the presidential race, neither’s leaving the political arena, either. Check out our conversation with Mr. O’Rourke among our story picks below, and let us hear how your 2020 is getting started. Until next Wednesday, we’ll see you on the radio.

You can revisit “Untapped,” our year-long look at the oil and gas boom in the Permian Basin, and our Apollo 11 special “Highway to the Moon.” We also named some of our best stories of the year, and examined how what happened in 2019 may shape this year. We hope you enjoy them – and look forward to bringing you more extraordinary programming in 2020.
