Dear Friend,

Happy December! With the holidays approaching and temperatures dropping, many Michiganders are heading out for holiday shopping, Christmas tree picking, and outdoor fun. Whether you are ice skating in Muskegon State Park or snowboarding in Marquette, there are always parks along the way for you to visit and outdoor activities to enjoy.

To find festive ways to spend your December, like lantern-lit hikes and snowshoe-making classes, visit Michigan.gov/DNRcalendar [ [link removed] ] for a complete list of events happening all around our state over this month.

Xmas Tree

The holiday season is the perfect time for Michiganders to enjoy cherished traditions, like picking out the right Christmas tree. That’s why I’ve declared December as Michigan Christmas Tree Month [ [link removed] ]. Our local farmers and agricultural communities work hard every year to bring joy into our homes during these months. I encourage Michiganders to support them and recognize all they do for our state by shopping for a beautiful Michigan grown tree. The good news is that, according to experts, this is the best year to buy a Christmas tree in years!

Michigan ranks third in the nation for the number of Christmas trees harvested, supplying about 3 million fresh trees to the nation every year. There are more than 560 Christmas tree farms on a combined 37,000 acres across the state. These farms range from large wholesale farms to small farms, providing the most popular types of Christmas trees such as Scotch Pine, White Pine, Blue Spruce, Black Hills Spruce, Balsam Fir, Concolor Fir, Douglas Fir and Fraser Fir.

This season gives Michiganders a chance to take pride in our agriculture industry and the nature our state has to offer. Each park is an important pillar in its community because it supports local businesses, creates jobs, and gives people beautiful, welcoming places to make memories. I will continue to work hard to invest in our parks, recreation and public lands so future generations can enjoy everything that Pure Michigan has to offer.

Sincerely,

Governor Whitmer
