Dear John,
Welcome to the last #BadFaithMedicine Breakdown of the year! In this newsletter, we chronicle everything we have been up to calling out anti-abortion fake clinics and the #BadFaithMedicine they insist on spreading,
We started this campaign because we saw the worrisome and dangerous impact of the #BadFaithMedicine that anti-abortion fake clinics spread, which we knew could have lifelong impacts. A recent case in Massachusetts highlights just how dangerous – even life-threatening – they could be: an anti-abortion fake clinic failed to refer a pregnant woman for an emergency consultation, which she needed, and ended up in the emergency room with severe hemorrhaging a week later. [1] As terrifying as this situation is, it is predictable and completely preventable.
Anti-abortion fake clinics are not held to the same safety standards as hospitals, doctor’s offices, or abortion clinics, because they are often not medical facilities. Anti-abortion fake clinics and the ‘pro-life’ movement they represent view pregnancy as something that only exists in a vacuum of toxic optimism and perfect health, making them deeply ill-equipped to support the majority of pregnancy decisions and outcomes.
No one should ever be misled or deceived about their health and safety. Especially since complications during pregnancy can turn dangerous and even deadly so quickly. Anti-abortion fake clinics are a threat to families, medicine, and our communities and must be treated as such. They are using the Dobbs decision and subsequent overturn of Roe v. Wade to dig deeper into their deception, and rebrand themselves as a resource in the reproductive health crisis that they helped manufacture. Anti-abortion fake clinics see pregnant people as an opportunity, not a patient in need of kind, compassionate, and safe health care.
As we rapidly head into a new year, I’m asking you to bookmark our anti-abortion fake clinic database. Now more than ever, we must all hold the responsibility of being vigilant in spreading accurate, affirming information about abortion, and helping people get real access to health care. Our database can be used to find the sources of #BadFaithMedicine in your community, and verify that you or someone you know doesn’t end up at one of the dangerous shams when seeking care.
Be someone’s ‘person’ for accurate abortion information and support in the new year. Another tip: save the date for Reproaction’s next webinar, “Supporting Someone Through Their Self-Managed Abortion” on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at 12pm ET.
In the meantime, from all of us at Reproaction, we wish you Happy Holidays.
In Solidarity,
