Hi John, I'm Ruwa!
I'm a community organizer, immigrant, Run for Something alum — and,
earlier this month, I became the first Muslim woman elected to the Georgia state Assembly and the first Palestinian ever elected to public office in my state.
To all the Run for Something supporters, volunteers, organizers, and activists who helped make this happen: Thank you.
Together, we made history.
I'm honored and thrilled to represent my community in Georgia's 97th State House District, but the truth is I never intended to run for office. Like so many young women, people of color, and members of marginalized groups, I never saw myself reflected or represented in the halls of power.
I had the credentials — community organizer, Communications Director for CAIR Georgia, and had been engaged in every election since 2014 — but I still didn't see myself as a politician.
That all changed when I attended a Georgia Muslim Voter Project training session for women from historically marginalized communities. A local journalist covering the event asked if I was thinking about running, to which I casually replied, "No, I don't think so."
A few days later a beautiful piece was published that began with "Ruwa Romman is contemplating a run for office." 😳
Despite my initial reluctance, that story planted a seed and became the burst of confidence I needed. With my community, family, friends, and the support of Run for Something by my side, I launched my campaign 15 days later.
I'm asking you to chip in

As a first-time candidate, it wasn't easy. Navigating the electoral process is intimidating. I was also inundated with voices telling me that I didn't stand a chance as a 29-year-old Muslim Palestinian woman running in white, conservative Georgia.
But through that confusion, Run for Something became the louder voice telling me:
You are powerful. You are a leader. You deserve a seat at the table.
And they do that for tens of thousands of other diverse young progressives just like me — each with their own unique stories, voices, and backgrounds.
The most powerful resource any candidate has is the community behind us. Run for Something gave me the courage, the strength, and the determination to keep going even when it was hard and painful.
When we show up for each other, we make history. Show up by donating
$5
or any amount to secure a diverse young progressive future together.
While I may be the first Palestinian and first Muslim in the Georgia statehouse, with your support, I know I won't be the last.
