Coalition Community Update

Dear Friends,

We've added another Hunger Fighter to the mix! We are so excited to introduce you to Gavin Perez-Canto, our new Community Food Resource Coordinator. Gavin will be leading our work to support community feeding programs throughout the Greater Philadelphia region.

"I am thrilled to join the Coalition as the Community Food Resource Coordinator, and I cannot wait to meet our pantry partners and learn about all the wonderful work they are doing in their communities. I believe food insecurity is a structural issue and is therefore a solvable problem. It takes powerful and connected communities to fight against hunger. I hope to facilitate and empower those currently doing the work in the Philadelphia region." - Gavin Perez-Canto

In The News

Our Executive Director, Melody Keim, joined Charrie Slater of Community Bridge on Family Radio! Listen in on this interview about how we fight hunger, what we are able to do to make an impact in the lives of families and individuals in the Greater Philadelphia region, and how you can get involved in the work to build a more food secure community.

Policy and Advocacy

SNAP Emergency Allotments (EAs): The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved Pennsylvania’s request to issue EAs in December. EAs are the extra SNAP payments issued in the second half of the month. For more information, including payment dates, see our EA Flyer for December.

Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Food Package: The USDA announced a proposed update to the WIC Food Package. WIC Food Packages allow participants to purchase specific foods to supplement their existing diets and support healthy growth and development. The proposed update will bring the food package further in line with the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP): Applications for LIHEAP, the program that provides assistance for home heating bills, are now available! With heating bills expected to increase this winter, LIHEAP can help families under 150% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines heat their homes.

SNAP Hotline In Action

We recently helped a client who was ordering groceries with SNAP benefits on Amazon because he was unable to leave his home. On this day, when the client went to order his groceries, there were no benefits to use. He had sent in a renewal for his SNAP benefits by mail, but the County Assistance Office never received that renewal and his benefits were cut off. In need of food and help with his SNAP benefits, he called our SNAP Hotline. Our SNAP Hotline Counselor was able to coordinate with one of our partners to provide a food delivery for him that same day, and also completed a SNAP application for him. He began receiving his benefits again the very next day.

If you would like assistance from our SNAP Hotline team, they are available to help Monday – Thursday from 9:00am to 5:00 pm and on Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Give our SNAP Hotline team a call at 215-430-0556. Asistencia también disponible en Español.
