John, you’ve already heard from me how important Common Cause’s upcoming U.S. Supreme Court case, Moore v. Harper, will be to our future.
At issue is whether your governor, your state’s courts, and your state’s constitution should have any say in how elections are run – or if the party that currently controls the legislature should get unchecked authority to do as they please.
But at stake is something more fundamental: whether our elections should be about the will of the voters, or about how the party in power decides to manipulate the outcome.
John, this legal “theory” has been on the extreme fringe for decades – but now, these partisan legislators want the Supreme Court to make it the law of the land. And, I hope you agree: we must fight like hell to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Here’s one reason I believe we can win: when you explain this ludicrous theory to pretty much anyone – Democrat, Republican, or Independent – they reject it out of hand as the dishonest power grab that it is.
And even though few have heard of this new threat – with your help, we are launching a massive public education campaign – so that everyone knows exactly what’s at stake, and is watching the Supreme Court closely during oral arguments next week.
You see, John, the public’s trust in the Supreme Court is down to historic lows. And if they give these politicians the greenlight to manipulate our elections, it would totally upend the checks and balances we depend on for our democracy.
Public opinion is on our side – because no one wants any one branch of government to have too much power. And our extremist opponents realize this too – which is why they know that their only path to stealing our democracy away is if they do so under the cover of darkness.
That’s why, even in the midst of our historic Protect The Vote 2022 volunteer effort, we committed additional resources – not just to argue and win this case in court, but to back our legal team up with millions of people mobilized to hold on to our rights and our democracy.
John, I know there are a lot of worthy causes asking for your attention – but this is a legal fight we simply can’t afford to ignore. Can you rush your contribution of $3 or more to help us win at the Supreme Court?
I believe that we will win this case – and stop this extremist attack on our rights.
