FACT CHECK
Claims that London and Manchester are ‘minority white’ cities are not true

“According to the ONS figures, London, Manchester and Birmingham are now all minority white cities.” —Nigel Farage

A widely shared video from Nigel Farage claimed ONS figures show "London, Manchester and Birmingham are now all minority white cities."

But the figures Mr Farage refers to show this is only true for Birmingham, not for London and Manchester.

While less than half of people in London and Manchester identified as being white English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or British, more than half in both cities identified as being of any white ethnicity.

** Health secretary's tweet on nurses salaries fails to mention overtime ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
Last week, health secretary Steve Barclay tweeted that the government’s most recent pay rise for nurses means a newly qualified nurse will typically earn more than £31,000 a year.

Mr Barclay also used this figure in an opinion article in the Sunday Telegraph, which was republished on the Department of Health and Social Care website.

However it’s not that straightforward. As several Twitter users pointed out, the starting salary for a newly qualified nurse is actually just over 27k.

Mr Barclay’s figure included an estimate of how much a newly qualified nurse would earn once you factor in additional payments including for working overtime and unsocial hours.

** Freedom of expression is at risk, while lessons from the pandemic are forgotten in the Online Safety Bill ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
This week, proposed changes were announced to the Online Safety Bill. We are concerned that unless important changes are made by Parliament, the Bill’s current and proposed provisions will fail to tackle harmful misinformation and protect freedom of expression.

"The government’s plan is a cover for platforms to pick and choose the harmful content they will tolerate. Too much power is being left with internet companies, when decisions about freedom of expression should be made openly and democratically.

“We know that people have died because of the misinformation surrounding Covid-19. We need a Bill that protects all citizens online - from harmful misinformation, and threats to freedom of expression.”
