JANUARY 8, 2020: Twenty-four (24) states will increase the minimum wage in 2020. ([link removed])

The statewide increases ranged from $0.10 in Florida to $1.50 in New Mexico and Washington. Overall, the average statewide minimum wage is currently $9.17 per hour, up from $8.68 the year before.

As a result of state-by-state action, areas with a higher cost of living now generally have a higher minimum wage (see map below).

The highest minimum wage in the nation can be found in New York City at $15.00 per hour. New York, however, has established lower minimums for less expensive parts of the state.

Washington, D.C., is next on the list with a minimum wage of $14.00 per hour.

On a statewide basis, the highest minimum wages are found in Washington ($13.50/hour) and California ($13.00/hour).

At the other end of the spectrum, 21 states use the federal minimum wage rate of $7.25 per hour.
