Raising the debt ceiling, once considered a routine duty of Congress to pay our bills, is now used by Republicans as an opportunity to threaten and extort concessions from Democrats. GOP Leaders have said that they will demand cuts in Social Security and Medicare in return for raising the debt ceiling.
And now, time is of the essence. Next month, Republicans regain control of the US House — but if Democrats raise the debt ceiling during the December lame duck session, they can deprive the GOP of a chance to hold the country hostage over the next two years.
Democrats must stand up to this obstruction before it starts and use their respective powers to end this manufactured crisis before it begins. We must speak out to end this debt ceiling game and protect Social Security, Medicare and our economy.
